Phil Freeman Portfolio: Professional Work

Portfolio: Professional Work
2011 - 2014
From 2011 - 2014, I worked professionally at Continental Research Corporation,
an industrial chemical supplier.

I created marketing materials to aid their salesforce.

The Inhibitaur was a mascot character I designed to embody Continental’s bold new rust-inhibiting products. He was based on a classical minotaur and given hulking proportions to show the product’s tough stance against rust. He was featured on the product’s label and several promotional materials,
including ads, flyers, and a t-shirt.

Hoodie & T-Shirt Designs, created for Continential

At Continental, I was tasked to illustrate for various label designs, flyers, brochures and ads to inject personality and life into the products.

Continental maintained an internal web portal of various resources for their sales force. I often created small web banners to inform them of various new products, promotions, and sales opportunities. These originally displayed at 280 x 400 pixels and rotated on the front page of the web portal.

So what’s a sales person to do when a random holiday has cut their week down to only four days? The 8x3 Promotion was a means to make up for that lost day and still celebrate the holiday in the eyes of the customer. They could get three free drums for every eight they purchased, mix and match. These 8.5 x 11 flyers helped the sales force show off this opportunity, using customized stock images and vector graphics.

To encourage sales during lackluster months, Continental used the Budget Buster Promotion. During this particular January, Continental wanted to connect with the popular Super Bowl, creating the Super Budget Bowl promotion. I photoshopped the company logo onto the uniform of a dramatic stock image and then built a flyer design around it. For the logo’s design, I was inspired by the historical Super Bowl logos of the past. On the back, two player silhouettes race for the glory through the various possible prize stages.

When it came time to update these two Equipment Promotions, I came up with a dramatic concept involving a construction worker interacting with the title text. Since we couldn't find appropriate stock photos, I took some of myself sporting several of the items featured inside.

In order to inform consumers about the Superbug crisis, I created the Continental Heroes mini-comic. This small 8.5 x 11 brochure featured Continental’s top two pest control aerosols flying around and fighting an army of nasty mutant bedbugs. Key facts were explained in word captions and on the back cover. This brochure was so popular that it was reprinted for several years after its initial launch.

To help promote business, novelty items were often brandished with the company’s logo that the sales team could give away to customers and at events. I was tasked with giving these items a bit more of a unique touch. For these Red Heavy-Duty Solo Cups, I gave the slogan “American-Made Industrial Grade” a polished type treatment with a mechanical, industrial feel.

This is an example of one of the many brochures I designed while at Continental. The goal was to explain which products should be marketed to schools and related departments during the end of the school year. This was to help facilities recover from the wear and tear left by the chaos of children. I chose bright, alternative colors that complimented the various products. I also incorporated several of the illustrations and images from the fronts of the products and photos of where they might be used. The cover showcases another one of my illustrations.

Examples of Action Shots I helped create for Continental Research Corporation. For many of the products, it helped to show how they worked with digital enhancements to better explain their functions to clients. I also shot many of the product photos with our new label. For the first one we were selling to local police stations and couldn't borrow a car to work on, so I photoshopped one in.
